Grand Rapids Biomedical Research Center

Higher education and medical research spaces are critical, requiring thoughtfully designed facilities and state-of-the-art construction. The Kramer Management Group was proud to serve as the Owner’s Representative for Michigan State University’s $88.1 million biomedical research laboratory in West Michigan. KMG led MSU through several strategic initiatives to bring this project to life, including multiple feasibility studies, development of cost scenarios, P3 procurement strategies, and other analytic methods.

Clark Construction and Rockford Construction worked with KMG to complete this project in 2017. The new facility was being constructed in the site of the former Grand Rapids Press Building, necessitating demolition and hazardous material abatement to prepare the site.

The new MSU research center is LEED-certified, using 70% less energy than the national average for laboratory-type buildings.  The facility is a 160,000-square foot space spread out over six levels that supports the critical work of more than 200 scientists advancing their research, collaborating with peer institutions, and improving the lives of people in West Michigan and far beyond.
